How was your application process at SOMIC?
A former classmate from vocational school, who had completed his apprenticeship at SOMIC, told me about an open position after he had left the company. He gave me the IT manager’s contact details, so I sent him an email introducing myself and asking about the correct application process. Instead of a formal procedure, he simply asked for my CV and soon invited me to an interview with him and the head of HR. In the end, my “application process” consisted of a short email, a subsequently submitted CV, and a single interview with the relevant departments.
Why did you choose this job and how does a typical workday look like?
I have always been interested and enthusiastic about IT. As a teenager, I spent a lot of time tinkering with computers, servers, and networks. So it was only natural to turn my hobby into a profession! Since no day is like the other, my morning routine can only be outlined briefly: with my first coffee, I take a virtual tour of the IT infrastructure to ensure that servers, switches, routers, and the like are running smoothly. At the same time, I take a look at the most important IT news to see if there are any new critical security vulnerabilities that require immediate attention. This is followed by our 15-minute department meeting, where we go through the day's tasks and set priorities. After that, I either devote myself to one of our numerous projects or process requests and problems in the ticket system.
What do you like most about your job?
As mentioned, no two days are the same. There are always new challenges and tasks to tackle. The continuous growth of SOMIC and ongoing digitalization constantly bring new systems, which in turn require different approaches and open up new opportunities. This constant variety allows me to learn something new every day, which I particularly appreciate.
What are the biggest challenges you face at work?
Bringing our four globally distributed sites under one roof and providing them with the same standards is a challenge that is always exciting.
Why is SOMIC a good fit for you?
SOMIC is a very good fit for me because I appreciate working in a growing company where things are constantly evolving. For me, change always means opportunities to learn new things and actively advance the company. Especially in IT, I find it exciting to help shape the technical infrastructure and processes and adapt them to new requirements. I like it when I can contribute my ideas through new developments and projects and thus actively shape progress at SOMIC.
